Hospice Transition Program Helps Cape Codders Deal With Grief

Yarmouth Police Lieutenant Steven Xiarhos recalls only a few details from last year’s wake and funeral for his 21-year-old son, Marine Cpl. Nicholas Xiarhos.
The entire community had turned out to mourn the loss of his son, tragically killed while serving in Afghanistan. Lieutenant Xiarhos does remember standing for 10 hours straight in the packed Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School gym, at one point seeing Governor Deval Patrick and Senator John Kerry behind him and the casket lying in state before them all.
 “I thought I was going to lose it,” Lieutenant Xiarhos said recently. “But then I looked over and saw one woman sitting there calmly. Our eyes met and it just settled me. Her presence brought me peace and confidence; I don’t know how, but it did.”
